Community Outreach Program
Why Outreach?
The Allentown Women's Center believes that knowledge is extremely important in comprehensive health and wellness. We believe that education is the best way to fight against sexually transmitted infections, diseases, and unplanned pregnancies. Knowing the facts about our bodies and learning the truth about birth control, HIV/AIDS, STDs, and abortion will help to share correct knowledge.
We strongly believe that the best way to strengthen our community is by empowering young women and men through education. Much of the awareness and knowledge learned by teens and adolescents today is received by their peer groups, which often tens to lack significant facts and important information.
Our Goal
AWC is passionate about educating adolescents, parents, and teachers on prevention efforts regarding the following topics:
  • Changing Bodies: adolescent development, puberty, self-esteem, "good touch/bad touch"
  • Prevention Education Programming: STD/STI, Contraception Education, Family Planning, Unplanned pregnancy, Abusive Relationships, Stalking, Harassment, Sexual Abuse, LGBT, Safe Sex Practices
  • Women's Health: Relaxation/Stress-Management Skills
  • Communication Skill-Building: Parent, Teacher, and Student workshops; decision-making

Alex, our Counseling and Outreach Coordinator, applies the evidence-based curricula of Family Life and Sexual Health (F.L.A.S.H., www.kingcounty.gov/health/flash) and integrates the newest information as put out by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS, sexedlibrary.org). She also incorporates the newest research learned throughout the Human Sexuality Doctoral Program at Widener University.

All lesson plans are able to be modified for varying time schedules, age appropriateness and topic priorities.
